Glucose testing screens for blood sugar levels. High blood sugar may indicate diabetes which can lead to blindness, heart attack, congestive heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, and amputations.
When we eat, our body uses the food we eat to create blood sugar or glucose. In healthy people a hormone called insulin, which is made in the pancreas, allows the glucose to enter the body's cells to be used for energy.
Some people either produce too little insulin or their body doesn't respond to it properly. The result is too high a level of glucose in their blood that ultimately leads to diabetes. Over time, diabetes can damage the heart, arteries, eyes, nerves, and kidneys.
Diabetes is a chronic disease that has no cure. From onset, treatment is about damage control and stabilization of blood sugar is essential. The good news is that if you keep your glucose under good control, you can delay or even prevent serious health problems.
Diabetes sometimes has obvious signs, but often people with diabetes do not notice any symptoms until it has caused serious problems. This is why screening for diabetes and maintaining a healthy, stable glucose level is important for your health. |
Test Preperations You should not ingest anything except water, black coffee, and prescribed medications for eight (8) hours prior to testing.
Note: If you are also fasting to have your triglyceride level tested, the period of fasting should be 12 hours. |

Bone density testing screens for risk of osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a disease where bones become fragile and more likely to break or fracture due to loss of bone density. Any bone can fracture. As we age, a greater concern for fractures of the hip and spine may be warranted. A hip fracture may require major surgery that can cause prolonged disability and even death. Spinal fractures can result in loss of height, severe back pain, and deformation.

Cholesterol testing screens for risk of atherosclerosis which can lead to coronary heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
Atherosclerosis is a disease in which excess cholesterol in the bloodstream forms a build-up of fatty plaque on the artery walls. As this build-up increases, it narrows the arteries and restricts blood flow to the heart and brain.
Restricted blood flow to the heart can cause chest pain or angina. When blood flow to the heart becomes severely restricted or blocked completely, it can result in a heart attack. The carotid arteries of the neck supply blood to the brain. If a carotid artery becomes blocked it can result in a stroke. |
Test Preperations Fasting is not required before testing for Total Cholesterol and HDL; fasting is required before testing for triglycerides. Do not ingest anything except water, black coffee, and prescribed medications for 12 hours prior to triglycerides testing. |

PSA testing is a laboratory analysis that measures a substance produced by the prostate gland called Prostate Specific Antigen. PSA testing is an effective aid in the detection of prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer found in men in the United States. It occurs in about 1 out of 10 men. The good news is that prostate cancer may be cured if it is diagnosed early enough.
The PSA blood test can measure small amounts of PSA in the bloodstream. While elevated levels of PSA do no harm, they are an important signal of possible prostate disease. The American Cancer Society recommends PSA testing and digital rectal examination (DRE) yearly for men beginning at age 50, and for younger men who are at high risk.
Although the PSA blood test is not perfect, it is the best test currently available for early detection of prostate cancer. Most cases of early prostate cancer cause no symptoms and are found by a PSA blood test and/or DRE. |

TSH testing is a laboratory analysis that measures a chemical substance produced by the anterior pituitary gland called Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. TSH regulates the production of hormones by the thyroid gland. An abnormal level of TSH in the blood indicates the likelihood that the thyroid is not functioning normally, making TSH testing an effective aid in the detection of thyroid irregularities.
The thyroid gland is located just below the "Adam's apple". It produces hormones, including T3 & T4, that affect and regulate virtually every bodily activity. Thyroid hormones control metabolism and organ function and can directly affect weight loss or gain, energy levels, skin condition, memory, heart rate, cholesterol levels, menstruation, bowel movement, and many other functions. Even a person's feeling of well-being.
If the thyroid gland is not working properly, a variety of symptoms and possibly severe medical problems can result. The good news is that if discovered and properly treated, most thyroid disorders can be controlled and the patient can lead a healthy, normal and active life. |

Hemoglobin A-1C is another method to monitor the control of blood sugar in diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic illness for which there is no cure. If left unstable, it can lead to blindness, heart attack, congestive heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, and amputation.
Hemoglobin A-1C is a periodic measurement of glycosylated hemoglobin. It is used to screen for hidden diabetes, and reflects an average blood glucose in diabetic patients during the last 2-3 months.
When we eat, our body uses the food we eat to create blood sugar. In healthy people, a hormone called insulin, which is made in the pancreas, allows the glucose to enter the body's cells to be used for energy.
